Welcome to Year 2

Autumn 1 Week 4

What a fun week we have had in Year 2!

The children have been extremely enthusiastic about their Great Fire of London learning and thoroughly enjoyed their workshop on Wednesday morning. Thank you to all the parents/carers whom have contributed towards the cost of this invaluable experience. They learnt lots of facts they did not know about this historic event and used their acting skills to tell the story along with the actors from The Rainbow Theatre Company. Ask your child what they know!

We have also been celebrating Orchard Way’s 50th anniversary by thinking of our fondest memories and publishing them for display as well as making bright, themed bunting!

Have a great weekend.

Autumn 1 Week 3

Another week has speedily passed by and the children have been working really hard.

This week in Literacy, they have been learning new spelling strategies, role playing scenarios to help write dialogue and they have been reading and answering questions based on extracts from The Day the Crayons Quit.

In Maths, the children have been continuing to break up a number into tens and ones describing the value of each digit within a two – digit number. Next week the children will extend their understanding by representing numbers in different ways e.g. 21 = 2 tens and 1 one (20+1), 1 ten and 11 ones (10+11) or 0 tens and 21 ones (0+21).

We have also compared the year 1666 to the present day. The children are looking forward to their theatre workshop on Wednesday!

Autumn 1 Week 2

The first full week is complete! Year 2 have fully settled into their routine.

This week, the children have been learning about fables and learned how to write expanded noun phrases. In maths, the children have continued with their place value learning by representing numbers in different ways.

In Science, the children have explored and identified different materials, describing them by their properties.

The children have also, practised their throwing and fielding skills in preparation for a game of cricket. Great progress was seen by all!

Thank you to everybody who attended the Parent Meeting.

Have a great weekend!

Autumn 1 Week 1

The children have returned from the summer holidays ready for Year 2. They have all settled into their new environment well. We have focused on settling into classroom routines this week as well as practising some key skills in preparation for the rest of the year.

The children have worked in pairs to complete a classroom treasure hunt, learned how to draw margins, practised their phonics, made 2 digit numbers using tens and ones, written the start of a short story and had their first P:E lesson of the term.

Also, the children have taken part in a nationwide fitness scheme called The Daily Mile. This is a 10 minute period whereby the children run or walk consistently. They have loved it!

Here are some pictures of the children in action:

Please feel free to say hello in the morning so that I can put parents’ faces to children! 🙂

Have a great weekend.
