PE and Sport at Orchard Way
We are committed to the health and wellbeing of our pupils. In addition to following the national curriculum guidance on PE, we encourage our pupils to take part in a range of physical activities. We invest in qualified sports coaches, swimming instructor/s and a dance instructor in order to deliver high quality sports provision to our pupils.
All pupils at Orchard Way have a minimum of 2 sessions of sport / PE per week. Pupils from Years 1-6 will have one lesson each week led by a qualified sports coach and a second lesson taught by either the Sporting Steps coach or qualified dance or swimming instructors.
These sessions are allocated as follows:
Pupils from each class in Years 1-6 will have one half term of weekly dance lessons with a qualified dance specialist teacher throughout the school year. Pupils will also have the opportunity to take this further by joining Dance Club after school and to represent the school at the Croydon Schools Dance Festival.
Pupils in Years 4 and 5 have three half-terms each of weekly swimming lessons which are facilitated by a qualified swimming instructor at Royal Russell School. Year 5 pupils’ lessons are from September to February, while Year 4 pupils’ lessons are from February to July. Our intention is to enable these pupils to have continuous weekly lessons in order to be able to swim at least 25 metres, which is in accordance with national curriculum expectations.
Our sports provision includes taking part in friendly and competitive matches between local schools and regional competitions, including:
- Croydon Primary Schools Netball league (A and B teams)
- Croydon Primary Schools Football league (A and B teams)
- Premier League Stars Football Competition
- Croydon Swimming Gala
- Croydon Schools Dance Festival
- Croydon Schools Athletics Competition

Orchard Way PE overview
The sporting steps coach, Dance teacher and class teachers work together to follow the following plan:
We follow the national Healthy Schools agenda, which supports pupils to make healthy food choices and be more active. The PE and sporting activities our pupils take part in supports their understanding of the importance of physical activity. This, together with discreet assemblies and PSHE sessions on the importance of a balanced diet and positive relationships contributes to the good practice relating to the health and wellbeing of our pupils.
School Games Mark
In July 2018 we achieved the Silver Schools Games Mark, which recognises the commitment to and development of competition, school sport, physical education and physical activity. We are now working towards attaining the Gold Schools Games Mark and hope to achieve this by July 2019. Click on the link below for more detail.
